Before God and these witnesses
Each of us knows his own birthday, and remembers the day he was married.
The pronouncement of husband and wife marks a definite time at which the covenant begins,
and removes any doubts in the minds of Beth and Chris or the witnesses about the validity of the marriage.
In a similar way, the new believer's eternal destiny is memorialized by his public pronouncement.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:
Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12-13
